The Bitter End Brewing Co is a development of the public house, the Bitter
End.
At the rear of the pub, and viewable through
a glass window in the lounge, is a Micro Brewery, set up to supply
customers with real ale. Two ales are produced - Cuddy Lugs (4.3%)
and Cocker Snoot (3.8%).
The Bitter End, next to the Kirkgate Centre, was opened four years ago
by Mike and Sue Askey, who saw the potential of the derelict building and
renovated it to their own designs.
As well as being the only pub in Cumbria to have its own working brewery,
it also has the title of 'Cumbria's Smallest Brewery'. The tiny brewery was
built with the help of two former head brewers at Jennings Brewery. The pub,
which is in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, also supplies Jennings beers, and a
variety of 'guest' real ales.
There are usually five different regular beers, and up to four guest beers,
which are changed weekly and often come from independant local breweries such
as the Derwent Brewery or the Hesket Newmarket Brewery. Meals are available
at lunch time, and in the evenings.
The Bitter End has recently won the award for 'Pub of the Year' from the local
branch of CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale).
