The Council of Europe awarded jointly on April 6th, 2000,
the highest distinction, the Europe Prize 2000, to the Townships of Cockermouth
and Marvejols.
This award was made following two previous awards to the
two cities : The Flag of Honour and the Plaque of honour.
The Council of Europe is composed of 41 European states,
having like common values to defend the principles of democracy, human rights,
in view to build a common and pacific future.
The Europe Prize was created in 1955, and is awarded once
per year, to a municipality having worked in an exemplary manner to propagate
the European ideal.
This conjoined discount to two twinning townships is a first
in the history of the Europe Price, and one of the rare times where the price
is put back to townships of small size, not having powerful city means that
can organize some more vivid.
But the quality of the twinning between Cockermouth and Marvejols allowed
the Commission of the environment to take a decision to the unanimity for
the assignment of the Europe Price 2000 in the two townships, whereas more
of 100 files of candidacy had been presented by other townships, wanting all
to be selected for the entrance in the new millennium .
